Cytogenetic Lab Information

by

Knud Christensen

The lab accepts blood samples on Wednesdays and Thursdays for chromosome analyses from all domestic animal species except mink.

The blood samples should be collected in heparin Vacutainers (green stoppers). It should allways be sodium heparin, lithium heparin ruins the sample by killing the lymphocytes. The samples should be kept at room temperature and can be used up till six days after collection.

Samples should be clearly marked with animal name or number and sent to Knud Christensen, Section of Animal Genetics, Grønnegaardsvej 3, DK1870 Frederiksberg C

The results will normally be available the next Tuesday.

Mink chromosomes can only be made from biopsies ! !

Price

For simple chromosome analyses concerning the chromosome number or the sex chromosomes, DKr 300,-

Other more complex investigations can either be regarded as being of scientific interest (no cost) or the price should be negotiated before the analyses can be initiated.

Analyses can be made from skin biopsies from abortions, but we should receive the sample within the first 24 hours.

Indications

Chromosome investigations are warranted in offspring after known translocations carriers and when there are fertility problems. Fertility problems For males are indicated by many returns to service or low litter size and for females no pregnancy or many abortions. Chromosome investigations should only be done when other known causes to fertility problems have been excluded.
